Abingdon To Be Home To New £1 Million Hydro Project
A major hydro scheme, based on the Thames, has been given the go-ahead.
Plans for a 1 million pound hydro-power project in the Vale have been given the thumbs up.
District Councillors approved plans for the hydro scheme, which will sit on the River Thames near a weir in Abingdon, on Wednesday.
It'll be run by local resident group Abingdon Hydro - who've raised the money needed by selling shares to local businesses.
Two pumps, known as Archimedes screws, will generate renewable energy as water passes through the weir.
The group claim the turbines could generate about £120,000 annually over the next forty years.
